Series – Argeneau Family

Hero – Lucian Aregeneau

Heroine – Leigh Gerard

Listened to audio narrated well by Rick Robertson.

Leigh is kidnapped and turned by a rogue, then rescued by Lucien and other enforcers when they came to eliminate the rogues.

Lucien comes off as an unfeeling, arrogant, and aloof, first treating Leigh like luggage and as a problem he wished to pass off to someone else. When the drugs to help her get through the turning weren’t brought on the flight, he puts in earplugs to ignore her screams. When he tries to pass her off to Marguerite, he finds her leaving town and he’s the only one to watch over Leigh and a huge mastiff left behind. Lots of folks pop in, but then leave Lucian to take care of Leigh, which didn’t make a lot of sense to me, in previous books there was always more than one person to help with a newly turned person. Lucian’s exhaustion leads to leaving Leigh unsupervised, and endangers humans.

When Leigh calls Bastien he quickly realizes things could go very wrong and yet he let’s Leigh talk over him, rather than makes her see the dangerous situation she’s in. I know these sorts of situations are what this series is known for but a part of me keeps hoping campy and improbable would give way to more realism, but still maintain the humor. Thankfully the last half of the book did just that and I started to enjoy the characters a bit more.

A bit of a mixed review, as this book started off interesting, fell down towards annoying and then back up towards likeable, with a lot of walk on appearances by previous characters.
