Hero – Detective Will Gallagher

Heroine – Anahera Rawiri

Listened to audio narrated by Saskia Maarleveld. I thought she did a great job narrating but there are so many characters that it might be easier to follow along reading the book versus listening.

Will Gallagher a decorated detective is banished to be the constable of a little town after his superiors could no longer trust his temper with suspects. He holds a lot of guilt after a mother and young boy died while under his protection. His time at Golden Cove has helped him regain control. I loved how he took care of the town and it’s residents, even if he was an ‘outsider.’

Anahera Rawiri, an acclaimed pianist, vowed never to return home after her mother’s death but eight years later she returns home to hide and nurse wounds after discovering her husband’s mistress at his funeral. She’s endured a lot, starting with an abusive father, the loss of her mother and the hits kept coming even after she left home, but she’s still a strong, caring woman and I enjoyed getting to know her.

While Will and Anahera are the main couple and have an HEA, this story is really all about solving the murder of a vibrant young woman that had a lot of admirers, and a secret lover. Will enlists Anahera to help him in the investigation which leads them to uncover a lot of secrets and wonder if it’s related to several missing young women over the years.

While I thought this was a good mystery/thriller story, the romance part fell flat for me. The overall pacing of the book was very slow, and I felt no real romantic connection between Will and Anahera, They just seemed to hook up, there wasn’t a lot of time spent on their relationship. Singh really brought out that small town feeling, with a full cast of interesting characters and several creepy options to keep you guessing whodunit.
