Series – Vampire Academy

Main characters – Rosemarie ‘Rose’ Hathaway, Vasilisa ‘Lissa’ Dragomir, Dimitri Belikov, Christian Ozera, Mason Ashford

Listened to audio narrated by Khristine Hvam. Narrator miss pronounced names, didn’t always match tone to events, Russian character had no accent and the over all tone felt much younger than the characters. This narration wasn’t a good fit for this book.

In this second installment of the Vampire Academy there’s a lot of angst and drama.. Rose Hathaway is prepping for her Qualifier Exam, faces Strigoi, tries to let go of her attraction to Dimitri to focus on Mason, jealous of Christian taking up all of Lissa’s time and if that wasn’t enough her Guardian mother comes to the academy, She rails against her neglectful parent, mean and ugly, but also finds out their might be more behind her mother’s actions than she previously believed.

She wants to be trusted and taken seriously as a Guardian but blithely gives away secrets that lead to three students taking upon themselves to pre-emptively attack the Strigoi. Rose tries to right her wrongs by teaming up with Christian to them and they all end up in mortal danger.

This book is all about teenage angst amongst unrest on how to deal with the attacking Strigoi. As in the previous book I struggled to like these characters. Their elitism, classism and mean high school acts overshadow an interesting take on Vampires, Dhamphire and their fight against the Strigoi. I keep hoping to see growth and maturity start to happen, and there are a few peeks but I need a little more from these characters.
