Series – The O’Malley Saga

Main characters – Lord Niall Burke, Skye O’Malley

Listened to audio narrated by Justine Eyre. I love this narrator but she doesn’t sound Irish accept for a handful of times and it’s odd since Skye and Niall are both Irish. Eyre still delivers an easy to listen audio but it would have been a much richer and more immersive experience if it had been done with accents that fit the characters.

Skye O’Malley is the beloved youngest daughter of her beloved ship merchant/pirating father. He raised her on the sea but also made sure she knew how to be lady. She’s brilliant, feisty, beautiful, a little spoiled and loves fiercely.

Lord Niall Burke is his father’s only son. He’s known as Captain Revenge as he runs clandestine raids against England. He’s always gotten what he wanted until Skye came into his life.

This is more of a saga, starting with Skye being betrothed to a lecher she loathes and falling in love with Niall right before she is to be wed. But nothing seems to go right with these two. Skye suffers much, from abuse, kidnapping, and rape, to the heinous manipulations of a Queen. Bertrice doesn’t pull punches and hits on a lot of sensitive areas that may not be difficult for sensitive readers.

This book is very much from the bodice ripper era, where men and their sexual needs rule the day and women are for their use and abuse. If you’re expecting anything politically correct you will be disappointed and your sensibilities are about to be slapped around and pummeled. In saying that if you enjoy bodice rippers prepare for a roller coaster and several detours before Skye and Niall find their happily ever after.
