Series – Chronicles of Elantra
Main characters – Kaylin Neya
Kaylin Neya is thirteen and grew up in fief of Nightshade on the streets. She has strange markings all over her body but doesn’t know why. But they are the same markings found on other children killed in ritual sacrifice. She can see and feel magic but doesn’t know why.
Lord Grammayre, Commander of the Hawks who enforces the Emperor’s Law, takes a personal interest in Kaylin after she tried to assassinate him. He finds her unusual and thinks she may be trained to serve the Law.
Seargeant Marcus Kassan is the sole Leontine in charge of missing persons investigations in the Halls of Law. He’s growly and takes no shit from anyone including Kaylin.
After failing to assassinate Lord Grammayre, Kaylin is read by a Tha’alani who can reach into another’s mind to read their thoughts and retrieve memories. Afterwards she is sent to the Hawks for training as a progressive early-education experiment.
Elantra is a world made up of various races: human, Barrani (immortals), Tha’alani, Leontine, Dragons, Aerian (winged) and more.
Hawks enforce Imperial Law and investigate crimes. When ritual serial killings started in the fief, Kaylin appeared to be one of the intended victims but escaped somehow.
This novella is the beginning of Kaylin’s story with the Hawks and while it reveals a lot of information, I sometimes felt lost in the different castes, versus Hawks and Swords. This may be best read after book one, but I haven’t read it yet so we’ll see. It definitely intrigued me enough to want to read more of her story and discover more of the Elantra world.
