Series – DC Icons

Main Character – Bruce Wayne

Listened to audio narrated really well by Will Damron.

While I really enjoyed the narration, the story itself did not live up to the previous books I’ve read in this series. I’m a Batman fan, so I was really looking forward to this book but it just seemed to go on an on. I hated seeing Bruce portrayed as such an innocent, gullible young man. He’s so smart but falls for some pretty obvious tricks.

The Nightwalkers are stealing and killing the rich and powerful in Gotham and Bruce finds himself dealing with one of them when he’s assigned community service in Arkham. Don’t get me started on the all kinds of wrong of him being exposed to hard core criminals in Arkham but this story could only happen in a comic world so I will let it pass.

As Bruce is pulled into Madeleine’s web he tries to stay objective but can’t seem to help wanting to advocate for her. Even after she obviously played him he goes back for more, making him come across as naïve and foolish rather than the incredible brilliant young man that he is suppose to be.

While I enjoyed getting to know the younger versions of Bruce and his friends it felt like forever before we got to the point of the story. Things don’t really start to pick up until the last part of the book and even when they do, don’t expect to see Batman because not once in the entire story is the name mentioned. We do get to see a bit of the gadgetry origins and other things that will lead to Batman but Bruce remains Bruce in this book not Batman. All of the above made the book feel more like a first in series book prepping for future stories rather than being very strong on it’s own. It’s an okay book but just didn’t work for me.
