Janie Atwood is a traveling home care nurse, specializing in elderly care. She was raised by her grandparents and when their health turned for the worse, she came home to care for them. They left her a letter upon their death pointing her to Cold River in search of family.
Sheriff Zack Kittredge left the ranch at eighteen, disillusioned and determined to not be like his father. He created rules for himself, to be the exact opposite of his father. Priding himself on his rigid control, and refusing to step outside the lines he’d drawn. His family refers to him as Saint Zack, claiming he acts the martyr.
Janie came to Cold River to find connections but after tripping and pouring her coffee all over the grumpy sheriff she wants to die of mortification. She may be clumsy and had spent her life in the friend zone, but the sheriff makes her wish to be an outlaw to keep his attention.
The pretty red-head who’d spilled her drink all over him must be up to no good. She makes him feel uncomfortable and he’s determined to find out what she’s really doing in Cold River.
Janie keeps forcing the sheriff to step out of his comfort zone, with her charm and sweet nature. It doesn’t matter how many times he tries to make her into a villain, he can’t contain her.
Their story starts bumpy, Zack is cold and hard to warm up to, even understanding he’s been trying to not deal with his childhood trauma and realities of his family, But Janie blossoms from the cocoon she’s been hiding in, with her companion opening her eyes to a few truths.
There are a lot of great characters in this sweet, charming and at times funny story but the connection between Zack and Janie sometimes hits but sometimes misses.
