This story picks up right where ‘Where the Night Consumes,’ left off. If you haven’t read the first two books, I strongly recommend doing so before reading this third installment. This review contains information from the previous books that may be spoilery.
Evren Hanali, leader of the Wandering Sols is dying. She’s lost her heart and has only vague, incomplete memories of what happened to her. The Sols want her to return to Orenlion in hopes to heal her but Evren wants them to keep tracking Nerezza. Hoping to avoid returning to a home of bad memories and toxic politics.
The decision is taken out of her hands when Prince Barrion Rhys hires the Wandering Sols to take him and his entourage into the Woods so he can negotiate an alliance with Orenlion.
The Wood is full of dangers and creatures who wish to harm those in the forest and Orenlion can only be found if the seeker is worthy. Evren knows the dangers that lie ahead, she only hopes she can live long enough to see the group to safety. But when the Prince gets kidnapped by the elves ancient enemy, things will never be the same.
This installment finally reveals Evren’s past, why she left her home and why she never wanted to return. Grant takes us on a ride with very little downtime as danger and plots are around every corner and Eith is at stake should they fail.
This is a bit darker than the previous books but very immersive, with a dangling thread leading us to the next book in the series, ‘Where the Light Dies.’ Each book in this series gets better than the last and I can’t wait for the next one.
