The Mister by E.L. James narrated by Dominic Thorbun

Story 3 of 5 stars

Heat 5 of 5 stars

Series – Mister & Missus

Main characters – Maxim Trefelyan, Alessia Demachi

Listened to audio narrated well by Dominic Thorburn and Jessica O’Hara-Baker. Both delivered a great performance, that was easy to listen to along with great sound accompaniments, that worked beautifully with the story and narration. Too bad the story wasn’t as good as the narration.

Maxim Trefelyan has become the new Earl after his brother died in an accident. He’s self-absorbed, and obsessed with beauty, He has to adjust from being a hedonist vagabond, dj, model, to a responsible caretaker and manager of the vast Earldom’s estate.

Alessia Demachi is a talented pianist, from Albania. She fled her homeland to avoid an arranged marriage to an abusive man. Betrayed she fell into the hands of traffickers, whom she escaped and is now working illegally as a daily cleaning lady in London for cash. She may have escaped, but she is still hunted.

From the moment he saw his Daily he became obsessed. As he learns more about her, her situation and her musical talent his obsession only becomes stronger. Even though she doesn’t think much of this playboy she can’t seem to help being drawn to him.

There are hints that these characters may have more to them but it never gets realized. They are shallow, obsessed with superficial looks and their body’s desires. I kept expecting more but it never happened.

S is for by L. Dubois

Story 5 of 5 stars

Heat 5 of 5 stars

Series – BDSM Checklist

Main characters – Julen Morton, Lihn Vo, Peter, Diann, Delaney ‘Laney,’ Joni

The Overseers of an exclusive BDSM club are shaking things up a bit with a BDSM checklist game. The letter S has so many items they choose three dominants and three submissives to cover them all.

Lihn Vo, Master Vo is a thinker and a planner but the others want to grab a sub and knock out items on the list quickly. He’s uneasy about it but goes along with the other two Doms.

Julen aka Master Morton is a dedicated rope top, with years of experience.

Master Peter is a demanding sadist, who fell in love with his sub and lost her.

Diann is a hardcore masochist who enjoys degradation kink. Peter used to be her master until he fell in love with her, but she didn’t feel the same way.

Delaney ‘Laney’ is a service submissive. She tries to be perfect but finds herself often overlooked or ignored.

Joni comes to the club to let go of the reigns of control. She knows her needs and isn’t afraid to advocate for them.

When the Doms first get together, their quick plan to split the letter S ends with three unhappily aborted scenes. They must regroup, and re-evaluate before starting again with their three submissives.

Dubois delivers another great addition to the checklist series. Addressing the real-life complexities of BDSM world and relationships, while delivering sizzling heat.

Stolen Faith by Mari Carr and Lila Dubois

Story 5 of 5 stars

Heat 5 of 5 stars

Series – Trinity Masters: Crossroads Contempt

Main characters – Brennon Reyes, Rowan Green, Izabel Serra

Izabel Serra is an analytical venture capitalist. and a legacy member of the Trinity Masters. A high achiever, brought up in a lavish world but trained and ready to take on anything the world throws at her. She’s been looking forward to her trinity ever since she joined at eighteen. At thirty-four she’s ready to begin this new chapter in her life with her trinity, and hopes it’s as wonderful as her parents’ trinity.

Brennon Reyes is a talented Hollywood screenwriter. He’s easy going, finding stories inspired by all around him. Quick witted and ready to diffuse situations with a story or joke.

Rowan Green is a ex-soldier, who carries a lot of guilt and pain from his last mission. He was pilot for a Special Operations Aviation Regiment, nicknamed the Night Stalkers.

Juliette Adams Lissand is the Grand Master of the Trinity Masters. She was kidnapped with one of her husbands, Devon Asher, the same night as Brennon, Rowan and Izabel. While her third, Franco Santiago was left behind.

I usually like to break down a story in my reviews but I think that will give too much away. What I will say is there are kidnappings, intense torture, and a threat to the Trinity Masters themselves as well as the main characters. This is an intense read, that plunges the reader into the story, bringing us along with the characters as their kidnappers attempt to break them down, as well as their recovery after. They may be beaten but they find they are stronger than they knew, especially together.

‘Stolen Faith’ may be a hard read for sensitive readers, read at your own discretion.

In saying all of that, Carr and Dubois handle these situations with an authenticity that is not always present in other stories like this. They also helped readers transition from the intensity of the main story by giving readers a huge tantalizing tease in the epilogue for the next Masters’ Admiralty book. Leaving me smiling at the end.

Claiming Hannah by Claire Thompson

Story 5 of 5 stars

Heat 5 of 5 stars

Series – No Safeword

Main characters – Master Mason, Hannah Davies

Mason is a renowned master chef, retired from his restaurant and is now the chef for the Enclave. He’s an intimidating Dominant, who likes to play with knives and needles, as well as train Dominants and slaves.

Hannah Davies is a successful BDSM romance author, who lost her husband a year ago. She wasn’t able to fully explore her BDSM fantasies with her husband. Slowly emerging from her grief she’s given an opportunity to do more than observe.

Mason thinks Hannah is a wannabe but he can’t seem to stay away from her. He’s hardcore and doesn’t have time for dabblers.

Hannah is finally getting a taste of what she’s been writing and fantasizing about, it’s scary and delicious and she’s not sure she is truly slave material.

Thompson brings out all the little nuances of the first taste of submission and BDSM, with Hannah’s emotions running the gamut and making her confront hard truths, while giving us an inner peek into a Dominant’s mind. The give and take, mistakes and learning, as well as some fictional license to keep the story flowing.

I’m normally a fast reader but I had to slow down for this one to take in all the details. Thompson delivers another great sizzling hot, emotion laden, BDSM romance.

Blade Song by J.C. Daniels, narrated by Maxine Witchell

Story 5 of 5 stars

Heat 4 of 5 stars

Series – Colbana Files

Main characters – Kitasa ‘Kit’ Colbana, Damon Lee

Listened to audio narrated well by Maxine Witchell. I enjoyed her characterizations; there’s quite a few characters and she made it effortless to fall into the story.

Kitasa ‘Kit’ Colbana is a half-breed Aneira, who lost her mother young and was raised by a cruel grandmother. She trained in brutal conditionss and was severely abused for perceived failures. However, she escaped, she has her blade and she is strong. Aneira’s have affinities for weapons, and make excellent thieves and assassins. Kit has uncommonly good luck, can disappear and has a unique ability to make connections to solve problems and find those she is hunting.

Damon Lee is a cat enforcer to his crazy alpha. Assigned to guard Kit. He has a past and a plan that he’s trying to keep under wraps. His attraction to Kit is unwanted and more than a little inconvenient.

Kit is hired to find a runaway cat shifter, nephew to the crazy alpha. If she fails to find him, she will be killed. She took the assignment to save a child not knowing it would come with a pain in the ass cat shifter bodyguard and a death clause for failure.

Kit’s backstory gives her insights not only into this runaway but as she follows clues leading her to a bigger problem than anyone realized. We’re shown how she got away from her own abuse and those that helped her along the way. She’s never lived a life free of pain or danger and is a combination of tough fighter and vulnerable woman still fighting her past.

Damon comes off as a complete bullying, abusive ass in the beginning and it takes some time for him to begin redeeming himself. But you can see how the sniping and sparring evolves as these two get to know each other better and begin to understand and appreciate each other.

There is more than one story being told here, as we learn about terrible pasts, the kidnapping of paranormal children, a budding romance and groundwork for the future. Daniels gives us a new paranormal world to fall into, with a variety of supernatural beings and interesting characters.

I’ve read several critical reviews about this book and I just have to disagree. There’s a lot of comparison to Kate Daniels and while they are both strong woman with dark histories, they are different stories and can each be enjoyed on their own merits.
